Last Mile Over Ethernet Technologies Group Test (Edition 1)
Exciting NEW report for 2003

Hype. Lots of hype. For years weve attended seminars, symposiums, summits call them what you will where the major topic of debate has been delivering broadband Internet access over the last mile. Lots of debate, very little action. We all know the political issues that get in the way here, but the big question has always been: is there really technology out there to deliver?

Now, were finally seeing the answer to that question in form of a handful of deployments, notably across Europe. These, in turn, have caused the rest of the world to take serious note. If it works for them, can it work for us? is the question being asked more than any other currently. So what better time to carry out a major test of the current crop of Ethernet Last Mile and Metro Ethernet technologies?

Within the NSS labs we are creating, with assistance from our test partners Spirent Communications,a test-bed simulating residential, SME and Enterprise environments. We will then apply the Triple Play to each scenario, focusing on the following:

  • Overall performance and scalability

  • Ability to control delivery (CoS, QoS etc)

  • Ease of deployment and day-to-day management

Obviously ROI is key here to justifying the deployment of last mile Ethernet technology as a business proposition, so we will be looking to provide typical deployment costs for each scenario/technology combination. We also want to include existing users in this report and suggest that each participating vendor gives us access to at least one customer. With clearance from these customers, we will add one customer case study per vendor, highlighting how their technology is being used in the real world. This, combined with the labs-based testing will give us a very complete picture and a definitive report that will appeal to vendors, service providers and end users, so covering every area.

Testing is planned to commence in Q1 2003 and continue through into Q2, with the report being published towards the end of Q2 of 2003.

Help design our group test criteria

If you are an end-user organisation looking to implement this technology, please get in touch with us and you can help specify the test criteria for this report. By adding your input to our test specifications we can make our reports even more relevant and real-world than they already are. It also means you get more focused information which directly relates to your needs.
