Press ReleaseNSS and Better Access Labs Announce Strategic Relationship for the Millennium Carcassonne, November 29: 1999 Europe’s two leading independent networking test labs and consultancies, The NSS Group and Better Access, have announced a strategic relationship starting in the Year 2000. The inaugural joint projects will be web cache and load balancing group tests where the combination of resources from the two companies will create the world’s most comprehensive test bed. “With networking products getting more and more complex and the focus increasingly on scalability, for us to always perform meaningful tests means that on some occasions we will need the strength in depth and flexibility that combining forces gives us”, explained Jan Guldentops, director of Better Access. A key feature of the testing will be the focus on a real user base and true application-based test scenarios. “You can’t simply plug in a few Netcom Smartbits packet blasters or throw some generic benchmarking programs at a networking or comms device and expect to obtain meaningful results”, said Steve Broadhead, director of NSS France. “Unless you are actually creating a realistic, working environment in which to test a product, then any results are effectively nothing more than marketing hype”, he added. Both NSS and Better Access specialise in tailoring test requirements to specific projects, rather than relying purely on traditional and inflexible benchmarking suites and artificial traffic generation in their tests. The relationship between the two labs will enable them to extend this methodology and create a truly pan-European test bed that can scale to thousands of local or remote network clients, when required. “We are keen to push the boundaries of testing in order to provide more accurate and realistic results that are meaningful to the person who ultimately has to make the buying decision”, said Bob Walder, director of NSS UK. “What is the point of quoting ‘packets per second’ all the time?” he added, “when the person signing the cheques really wants to know how many people a particular box can support, or how many e-mail messages or SQL transactions can be processed per hour”. The first combined projects will be based around web caching and load balancing. Both labs are currently in the process of talking to vendors who wish to be involved in each of these tests, due to be carried out in the first half of the year 2000.
